Turbo Containment Blanket for Drag Racing: What Teams Should Specify

Oct 29, 2026

For a drag racing build, ordering a turbo safety blanket involves three separate decisions: what the competition rules require, which blanket configuration fits the car, and what evidence supports that configuration. Resolve these questions before placing the order rather than leaving them until technical inspection at the track.

The BSTFLEX Turbo Safety Blanket is intended for compressor-housing containment applications. BSTFLEX accepts custom sizing and construction inquiries, but a custom fit and eligibility for competition are different matters. Where a class requires a particular specification or certification, confirm the documented status of the exact product before purchase.

Start with the Rule That Applies to Your Entry

Do not assume that every drag racing class has the same turbo containment requirement. Read the current general regulations, class rules and relevant event bulletins. Distinguish between equipment that is mandatory, equipment that is recommended and equipment that requires a particular approval or identification.

Send the relevant rule wording with your inquiry. A request for a “race-ready turbo blanket” leaves too much open: the supplier needs to know which housing must be covered, whether a named specification applies and what documentation the technical officials expect.

When the wording is unclear, ask the event's technical department before committing to a purchase. Keep the response with your vehicle records. A product description, supplier quotation or previous inspection result should not be treated as a substitute for meeting the applicable requirements.

Separate Fitment, Performance Evidence and Event Acceptance

Fitment: Does the Assembly Match the Car?

Confirm the compressor housing configuration and the intended retention arrangement. A blanket that closes around the cover has demonstrated only that it can be positioned there; that observation does not establish its containment performance.

For dimensions and sourcing information, use the BSTFLEX compressor containment and custom supply guide. For a racing purchase, add the class-specific requirements to that fitment information.

Performance Evidence: What Was Actually Evaluated?

Ask which documents apply to the proposed finished assembly. Identify the construction and mounting configuration covered by the evidence, rather than relying on the fabric name or a temperature rating. A material datasheet is not an assembly containment test.

Do not assume that evidence transfers unchanged when materials, thickness or the mounting arrangement change. Ask the supplier to identify any further evaluation required for the proposed version.

Event Acceptance: Is the Documentation Applicable?

Compare the supplied information with the competition's requirements. Keep product identity, required labels and supporting documents consistent. If a required approval or document is unavailable, resolve the issue before ordering the product for that class.

Also distinguish containment from insulation. A conventional turbine housing heat blanket should not be submitted as evidence of compressor containment merely because both products are called turbo blankets.

Prepare a Race-Specific Purchasing Brief

A useful inquiry lets the supplier assess the application without guessing. The following checklist is a purchasing aid, not a replacement for the event's technical rules.

Information to Send What to Clarify
Event and class Identify the intended competition and include the relevant rule extract and its revision.
Required protection State which housing or assembly the requirement concerns. Identify separate thermal protection needs separately.
Actual installation Provide housing drawings or measurements and photographs showing the installed position.
Evidence and identification List any required test documentation, certification, product marking or service-date information.
Quantity and configuration Separate development samples, vehicle sets and spares. Identify each distinct installation position.
Delivery and review Give the required delivery date and allow for sample review, documentation checks and any unresolved technical work.

Review Both Positions on a Twin-Turbo Build

Where separate compressor blankets are specified, assess each installation individually. Two turbochargers described as the same size do not necessarily have identical installed access or surrounding pipework.

For example, one compressor may sit beside a chassis member while the other has an open approach to the closure. Provide photographs of both positions rather than asking the supplier to infer the second installation from the first.

Identify left- and right-side requirements in the purchasing brief. Confirm whether the same documented assembly serves both positions or whether separate configurations need review. Do not assume that a blanket covering one compressor satisfies a requirement concerning both.

Define What the Sample Review Must Establish

Before ordering a custom sample, agree on its purpose. A fitment sample can help review shape, access and the proposed retention layout. It does not, by itself, establish containment performance or competition acceptance.

Record the sample reference and any changes requested after review. If a strap position, seam, material or mounting detail changes, ask the supplier how that change affects the final specification and the evidence required for it.

For repeat supply, reference the agreed drawing and construction revision on the order. Identify which features may vary and which must remain unchanged. A purchase instruction such as “make the next batch like the sample” is less precise than a documented configuration.

Keep purchasing approval separate from technical release. The team may accept the price and delivery plan while a documentation question remains open; that commercial decision does not resolve the technical question.

Keep the Installed Assembly and Its Records Together

Prepare a record for the blanket actually fitted to the car. Useful items include its product reference, the applicable instructions, installation photographs and any required compliance or service records. Keep information for spares separate when their configurations or histories differ.

If the turbocharger, compressor housing or retention arrangement changes, flag the change for review instead of carrying the old paperwork forward without checking it. Previous acceptance at an event should not be treated as permanent approval for a changed installation.

For condition checks after use, refer to Turbo Safety Blanket Inspection: When to Replace a Turbo Shatter Blanket. Keep serviceability decisions separate from the original purchasing decision.

Discuss Your Drag Racing Application with BSTFLEX

For a custom turbo safety blanket inquiry, send BSTFLEX the compressor housing information, installation photographs, intended class, required documentation and order quantity. Include the relevant technical requirement so the proposed supply can be reviewed against it.

For race builders and parts distributors, distinguish a single vehicle project from a repeat supply program. State whether the order requires separate installation configurations, spare assemblies or project-specific labeling. Available options and technical documentation should be confirmed for the proposed product.

Contact BSTFLEX to discuss compressor containment blanket requirements. Confirm the product specification, evidence requirements and delivery scope before approving production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are turbo safety blankets mandatory in every drag racing class?

Do not assume a universal requirement. Check the current general regulations, class rules and event bulletins to establish whether a blanket is required, recommended or subject to a particular specification.

Does a race-ready product description prove competition eligibility?

No. Match the exact product and its documentation to the applicable requirements. A marketing description or supplier quotation does not establish that the assembly is accepted for a particular class.

Can a fitment sample prove containment performance?

No. A fitment sample can help assess shape, access and the proposed retention layout. Containment performance requires evidence applicable to the finished assembly; successful trial fitting does not provide that evidence.

Can a twin-turbo car use two identical safety blankets?

Possibly, but each installed position must be reviewed. Housing geometry, pipework and access can differ. Confirm whether the same documented blanket configuration is suitable for both positions.

What should a race team send BSTFLEX before ordering?

Provide the compressor housing information, photographs of each installation, the relevant competition requirement, required documentation, quantities and delivery needs. Identify whether the request concerns samples, vehicle sets or repeat supply.
